Benefits of Home Gym Shed

Like we said, a gym membership is often more hassle than it's worth. Building your gym shed outweighs the negatives that come with a gym membership in a few ways.

Having a home gym shed is more convenient and accessible than a regular gym membership. You can work out whenever you want without having to leave your house. No need to worry about gym hours or commuting to a gym. You have the flexibility to exercise at any time that fits your schedule.

Because of the convenience, the second inter-related point is that having a home gym in your backyard is also time saving.

You can exercise whenever you have free time instead of planning your schedule around the gym's hours. No more early morning or late nights!

Another benefit to having a home gym over a gym membership is saving money. Investing in your own gym can save you money in the long run.

This is because you can avoid costly membership fees and auto-renewals. Sometimes, people forget to cancel these memberships. By having your own gym, you can avoid these expenses.

Having a home shed gym offers privacy and customization during workouts. This is something that may not be available with a gym membership.

Some people prefer to exercise alone and may not use all the gym equipment.

Perhaps they only focus on cardio and don't require heavy weights. A gym shed provides control and privacy that a public gym cannot offer.

This allows individuals to work out in a more personalized and comfortable environment. Having a gym shed can cater to specific fitness needs and preferences.

Building a gym shed may seem costly initially. However, the savings over time and the positive impact on your quality of life make it a worthwhile investment.

With ease of access, full customization over the entire building process, and cost cutting an annual membership fee, you can accomplish your fitness goals at your leisure and at your own pace.

Where and What to Put in Your Home Gym

When building your gym, the two main questions to consider are: where to place it and what equipment to include.

Decide how spacious you want your gym shed to be by measuring the space you have in mind for it. This will help you determine where to place it.

Obviously, the second issue of what to have in your gym is inter-related to its size. Our largest shed size we show online is 14x40.

However, if you want to go larger for your home gym shed, we can build the structure for you at your residence and build out to 16’ in width and over 70’ in length!

Another option available when designing your gym shed is that we can also put two shed buildings together to make your gym shed even larger than standard sizes of pre-built sheds. This would require that the building would be built at the site instead of being transported by truck and trailer. DOT regulates the size of sheds that can be delivered via truck and trailer.

Gym equipment comes in different sizes. We listed common gym equipment found in homes and their average square footage.

Space Needed Inside

  • Treadmill—30 square feet

  • Elliptical trainer—30 square feet

  • Single-station gym—35 square feet

  • Free weights—20–50 square feet

  • Stationary bike—10 square feet

  • Rowing machine—20 square feet

  • Stair climber—10–20 square feet

  • Ski machines—25 square feet

  • Multi-station gym—50–200 square feet

You don't have to include all the workout equipment listed above in your shed. It's just a helpful guide to help you decide what gym equipment will fit in your shed.

Construction Considerations

Beyond simply accounting for both exterior and interior sizing dimensions, when designing your custom shed gym you also have other construction considerations to keep top of mind.

Perhaps the first consideration is that of style, we at Alpine currently have four different shed styles to choose from each with their own distinctive flair. Stylistic considerations truly boil down to personal preference more than anything else.

Our Alpine shed series is our top of the line model, made with premium materials and we’ve often come across customers who want to turn this shed model into another structure like a workshop or garage.

Meanwhile, customers often find that our Evergreen series is well-suited for backyard storage needs. While it is a bit more paired down and simpler but just as easy to convert into other structures.

Our Modern Highland shed is another stylish  offering. Also possibly the most “aesthetic” out of range of style, with large bay windows and stock vented eave system, the Modern Highland is a great choice to convert into a home gym, man-cave or something else entirely!

Finally our fourth and final choice is our latest shed model, the High Country Shed. This model blends our passion for functionality and our artistic flair with large double French-style doors, decorative shutter accents, and large windows.

With its extra tall walls, it also makes for a perfect gym shed as it comes with a high ceiling, able to fit even the tallest and widest work-out equipment and gear.

Another factor to consider when designing your gym shed is that of ventilation.

You’ll want to keep the shed well ventilated so it's not overly humid or too hot to work out in during the summer, while still comfortably warm during the winter.

If you ever held an ice cold bar bell, you’ll know that it isn’t particularly pleasant.

If you watch workout videos on Youtube, have a Peloton bike, or similar piece of workout equipment, you’ll likely want to have electricity running to your shed to power these items to get the most of your workout.

We can include multiple electrical inputs during the customization process.

The final consideration to take into account is if you’ll want to include shelving units to save floor space and hold any spare equipment like resistance bands, yoga mats, smaller dumb bells, and the like.

Having shelving units will allow you to have more available floor space to use for larger equipment or an area for yoga or similar practices.
